About Agra

Agra, the most romantic city in India, is famous for the marble edifice 'Taj Mahal' hued in the eternal beauty that is immortal. Besides Taj Mahal, Agra is known for the Agra Fort and the Fatehpur Sikri, the red sandstone city made by Emperor Akbar.

History

Agra is a medieval city situated on the banks of the river Yamuna. It is generally accepted that Sultan Sikandar Lodi, the Ruler of Delhi Sultanate founded it in the year 1504. After the sultan's death the city passed on to his son Sultan Ibrahim Lodi. He ruled his Sultanate from Agra until he fell fighting to Babur in the First battle of Panipat fought in 1526.

Geography

Agra is situated on the banks of Yamuna river. It has an average elevation of 171 metres (561 ft). On the north it is bounded by Mathura, on the south by Dhaulpur, on the east by Firozabad, on the south-east by Fatehabad and on the west by Bharatpur. Agra is the third biggest city in Uttar Pradesh. The Agra district is divided into Six Tehsils and 15 Blocks. Total number of Nayay Panchayats in the district are 114 while Gram Sabhas stands at 636. The total populated villages are 904. The total number of police stations in the district are 41 out of which 16 are in Urban area and 25 are in Rural area. The total number of Railway Stations (including Halts) are 29 and Bus Stands/Bus Stops are 144. Total number of Broad Gauge lines is 196 K.M. and Meter Gauge is 35 K.M..

Climate

Agra, located on the Indo-Gangetic plain has a sub-tropical climate, with long, hot summers from April to September. The monsoon months from July to September see about 67 cm of rainfall annually. Winters last from November to February, with day time temperatures averaging about 24 degrees, while night temperatures around 6 degrees. Temperatures below freezing are not uncommon during the winter. The best months to visit Agra are March, October and November.

Taj Mahotsav

The Taj Mahotsav [2] is a 10 day festival held in February every year at Shilpgram, near the Tah Mahal).

How To Reach

BY Plane
Kingfisher Airlines have started a flight which connects Agra to Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur.

By train
Agra is on the main train line between Delhi (Station Code : NDLS) and Mumbai (Station Code : CSTM) and between Delhi and Chennai (Station Code : MAS) and many trains connect Agra with these cities every day. Some east-bound trains from Delhi also travel via Agra, so direct connections to points in Eastern India (including Kolkata) are also available. There are close to 20 trains to Delhi every day, and at least three or four to both Mumbai and Chennai.

By bus
A number of buses connect Agra with New Delhi. It takes around 4-5 hours to reach Agra by bus. There are basically three interstate bus stands:

Idgah Bus Stand is the primary bus stand for intercity travel, in the heart of the city, 8 km from the Taj. Bijlighar Bus Stand (also called Powerhouse Bus Stand) located near the Red Fort, 6 km from the Taj. New Bus Stand at transport nagar, 12 km from the Taj, is only for other state's bus services (i.e. all except U.P. Roadways).

Diesel Shed

The railway diesel shed located here provides employment to a large number of people and holds an important place in town's economy. The Diesel Shed Abu Road was commissioned by Indian Railway an MG Shed on 26 October 1966. It was then the biggest MG Shed of Western Railway with a holding of 112 locos. With BG conversion under Unigauge the shed was converted to a BG shed with a holding of 60 locomotives. There are 68 Supervisors and 570 workers in the shed.

A Diesel Training Centre is located with the shed that conducts promotional, refresher and special courses for loco running staff as well as formal training of shed maintenance staff.
