About Jodhpur

Set Amidst the Thar Desert, the second largest city of Rajasthan, Jodhpur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Rajasthan. Rao Jodha founded the former capital of the Marwar state, the city of Jodhpur in 1459 AD. As you travel through the Jodhpur city, you get well acquainted with the fortification of the city done with 10 km long wall and 8 gates.

The majestic forts, palaces and temples retain the historic and royal grandeur of the city of Jodhpur. The delicate and intricately made handicrafts, folk dances, folk music and the people in the traditional attire of Rajasthan make the city quite attractive and picturesque in every sense. The two-day Marwar Festival held here in Jodhpur, once in a year, is another principal event that pulls the tourist traffic towards Jodhpur.

History

The Rajput chief Rao Jodha founded the city of Jodhpur in 1459. Earlier, it was the capital of the Marwar state of Rajasthan. A 10-km-long wall made of stone surrounds the city. Eight doors stand all through the wall leading to different places of Jodhpur. The city has about 100 towers most of which are surrounded by defensive battlements. The guards' chambers, constructed high up above the ground and fitted with iron spikes on top, could be seen alongside these walls.

Geography & Climate

Jodhpur is situated at the edge of the Thar Desert with Jaisalmer on its west, Barmar, Jalor and Pali on its south, Bikaner on its north, and Nagaur on the eastern side. It has a typical desert climate, dry and hot. The ideal time to visit this place is the period between November and March. The city is like an oasis in the vast desert, with a variety of thorny shrubs all over the area. It also has some of the animal species that can survive in an arid and dry environment.

The climate of Jodhpur is generally hot and arid but with a rainy season from late June to September (Köppen BWhw). Although the average rainfall is around 360 millimetres (14 in), it is extraordinarily variable. In the famine year of 1899, Jodhpur received only 24 millimetres (0.94 in), but in the flood year 1917 it received as much as 1,178 millimetres (46.4 in).
